Turkey Chop is on the list of must-check-out spots in the near future. During the winter months (of 2014), they had some kind of Monday promotional special. I went passed the place so many times, yet have not placed an order. Give them a chance internet audience. Plus, they’re located in an area that I used to live.

Thanks for this. I am PROUD to say, I’ve eaten at most. The places I haven’t eaten, I will definitely patronize as we must support our community businesses. One point, though: I wish you would relay to these businesses that, while their products are excellent, the service is generally lacking. There is an old saying “The customer is always right. Even when they are wrong, they are right.” We know that the “brothers” and “sisters” can definitely try you, the attitude developed while dealing with an irate and sometimes “wrong” customer, should not carry over to your other customers. The glances, lack of certain pleasantries (such as “please” and “thank you”) is very prevalent in our community. I cannot tell you how rare it is to have anyone say “Thank You” when I am being served…even at a McDonald’s, Walmart, etc. My parents had a QSR when I was a kid. I worked there and was told I must ALWAYS say Thank you to a customer. Even when there is a problem with the “employee”, often times when you ask to speak to the manager, the attitude is the same. Some of my favorite places listed here have some quite STANK attitudes from the owners themselves. #wehavetodobetter

  44. BlackJesuscom August 26, 2015 at 9:44 am -

I agree completely. Sometimes you will look pass ok food if the attitude and service comes with a smile and a thank you. Black folks spend over $30 billion yearly eating out. To who you give your money you give your power. Let us give this power more often to one another with a smile.

Surf’s Up has another location in South Shore right next door to Give Me Some Sugah and That’s a Burger moved somewhere on Stony near 83rd. Sip and Savour has another spot in Bronzevillie on 43rd I think next door to Ain’t She Sweet. Honey1 is a father son BBQ place that moved to 43rd and Cottage and I like it better than Lems.

I have been to a lot of these and look forward to stopping by the places I missed. Thanks for this

  54. Keneesha Hodge October 23, 2015 at 10:49 pm -

Wow, I thought sweet maple was owned by Latinos cause that’s all you see working in there from the kitchen to the door. Anyhoo, I feel like a terrible black chicagoan cause I haven’t been to even a handful of these restaurants. I’d also like to bring up a place not listed – Grub Chicago, also a black owned restaurant in Little Italy just a couple of blocks east of sweet maple. And nope, I haven’t been there either. I have a lot of eating to do.

  61. Rita Bee October 26, 2015 at 8:51 am -

I’ve eaten at about 25 plus places on this list. I love supporting my people and enjoy the food we make. Now I can say I keep the same expectation with service that I do our ethnic counter parts. If I don’t like an aspect of the service the only way we can improve is if we address what we do not like to the establishments that we frequent. On the other hand owners of the establishment need to be open to hearing the opinion of the people who patronize their business.

  62. Patrick October 26, 2015 at 10:20 am -

I enjoy the list. Even though I’m in Florida I support black owned businesses all the time. I believe in supporting my own people. I aint part of black dollar task force I just do it.

  67. Orlando coombs December 7, 2015 at 12:00 pm -

I dont care if its black owned business or not. If the service is poor and rude and out of order I will not go back. I refuse to tolerate that foolishness. Certain places I don’t mess with. Places where they rub me the wrong way. This is why you have four in five small businesses going under in the first five years. Poor customer service and sloppy business will cause you to go under quickly. I will not support sloppy, poor taste, and inappropriate business practices nowhere. I dont give a damn who you are. Just cause your black owned, dont mean I’m supporting you. If you serving shit I dont eat I aint going up there. But I will support quality black owned businesses because they have good food and great service. Its some black owned businesses that I would not be caught dead in. Cause they do sloppy business and they not above board. But Quality business trumps race any day of the week.
