Malik the Wordsmith
to perform at Fourth Funny Fridays Oct. 29
Being
from Chicago and not hearing Malik Yusef perform live is like never
visiting the Sears Tower, Mosque Maryam (headquarters of the Nation of
Islam) or the Museum of Science and Industry. It is a shame because
Chicago-bred Malik (known as "The WordSmyth") is one of the country's top
spoken word artists and, like the before mention places, a Chicago
treasure.
Malik will be performing Friday, October 29 at the Holiday Inn in
Matteson, Ill. There's no doubt you'll be inspired by this brother who
finds his finds inspiration from "my 9-year-old son, his dreams, the
ancestors. There is so much inspiration out here. Just hold your hands in
the air and feel it," he said.
Malik (which in Arabic means "ruler") stays busy. He's working in
launching a non-profit organization with former Chicago Bulls star Craig
Hodges and releasing a book of poetry. He's also preparing to release a
new compilation through Warner Brothers that features Jay Z, Mos Def,
Erica Badu and others. "It's going to be a DVD with videos and short
movies with poetry interloped through the whole thing," he said. He has
other projects with Chicago's Do or Die, J.U.I.C.E and Bumpy Johnson.
Malik got his first big break when "Love Jones" director Ted Witcher hired
him to coach Larenz Tate. "That movie connected me into the Hollywood
scene," he said.
Malik has appeared WGN Morning News Show, ABC Worldwide News, BET's Rap
City and the CBS game show "Know Your Heritage." To top off his Television
credits Malik Yusef performed "I Spit…" on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents
Def Poetry."
Truth be told, if Malik were from another city, his debut album "The Great
Chicago Fire…A Cold Day In Hell" (Zoawe/Universal) released back in
January 2003 would have gone platinum. However, the Hip Hop world is
starting to really recognize the vast talent Chicago has to offer and
Malik is destined to continue to be one of Chicago's artistic rulers that
others will try to measure up to.
