Why We Fight is a must have for the home library Toure Muhammad Why We Fight is an extremely eye-opening, sober account of how the “military industrial complex” came into being and what drives it today. With a promo that says, “it is nowhere written that the American empire goes on forever,” this DVD distributed by SONY Pictures, Why We Fight gives a daring glimpse into the inner workings of the military industrial complex and its toll on the American political and social landscape. Produced by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki (The Trials of Henry Kisenger), the DVD highlights how just about every president had something they didn’t like somewhere in the world that we must go to war against or invade. The Why We Fight DVD featured interviews and observations by a ‘who’s who” of military and Washington insiders including Senator John McCain, Gore Vidal, and Dan Rather. Beginning with President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s prescient 1961 speech warning of the rise of the “military industrial complex,” Why We Fight moves well beyond the headlines of various American military operations to the deeper questions of why America seemingly is always at war—Guatemala, Lebanon, Laos, Congo, Brazil, Grenada, Panama, etc., etc. Most haunting is the remarks of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower who during his farewell speech, warned the American public about the creation and growth of the military industrial complex—a term he either coined or at least made popular. The DVD also highlights the stated ideals of current Bush cabinet members Wolfowitz, Cheney and Rumsfield to have the U.S. emerge as the only real superpower in the world--by any means necessary. The film was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize Sundance Film Festival and is a must have for the home library. For more info, check out http://www.sonyclassics.com/whywefight/ |
