Hidden Figures: The Album

Based on box office figures, awards received and nominations I think it’s safe to assume most of you have either seen or heard about the movie Hidden Figures. Bravo to Taraji, Octavia and Janelle. The trio did an outstanding job portraying the main characters Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. But did you know the soundtrack was hot too?

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the film’s soundtrack was written and produced by Pharrell Williams. The creative powerhouse is a Virginia Beach Native ,raised just a quick road trip away from the NASA Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, which is the main setting of the movie.

Hidden Figures was set during the 1960’s leading up to NASA sending astronaut John Glenn into space. Although Hidden Figures The Album contains all new music, it blends well with the period music that plays throughout the movie.

Pharrell Williams was interviewed on the Ellen Show and asked why was it important to him to be a part of the telling of this story. Pharrell responded with, the story needed to be told and he also mentioned how all women were great. So yes the story of great black women was portrayed by great black women backed by a soundtrack featuring great black women.

I must say Pharrell was in his zone during the making of this soundtrack. The majority of the ten tracks successfully blend 60’s inspired melodies with modern voices. Mr. Williams didn’t complete this mission alone. He was accompanied on the album by one of the films co stars Janelle Monae. The Queen of Hip Hop Soul herself, Mary J Blige joins in. Soul music’s legendary daughter, Lalah Hathaway also lends her talents to the Hidden Figures Soundtrack. Gospel singer Kim Burrell adds an inspirational song. Alicia Keys and her super producer husband complete the roster of talent enlisted by Mr. Williams.

I must admit I can listen to the entire Hidden Figures soundtrack repeatedly. I will admit I do find myself replaying Crystal Clear, performed by Pharell, the most. I am also partial to Mirage by Mary J Blige. Apple sung by Alicia Keys is also on my tops list. If you have not already check it out. Hidden Figures the soundtrack is out now and available wherever music is sold.
